Description
This 2011 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG is more than a grand tourer. It is a modern icon that resurrects the spirit of the legendary 300 SL Gullwing for a new generation. Conceived by Mercedes AMG as its first fully in house supercar, the SLS combines heritage design cues with cutting edge engineering, from its long bonnet and cab back proportions to those dramatic gullwing doors.
Under the hood sits a hand built, naturally aspirated 6.3 litre V8, known internally as the M159. It delivers 563 hp and 650 Nm of torque, with dry sump lubrication that allows the engine to sit lower for improved handling. Paired with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual clutch seven speed transaxle transmission and rear wheel drive, the SLS sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and runs on to an electronically limited 317 km/h. With a DIN curb weight around 1,620 kg, the car offers a remarkable power to weight ratio of roughly 2.9 kg per horsepower.
The aluminum spaceframe chassis, double wishbone suspension and rear limited slip differential give the SLS a precise, communicative feel on the road. Finished in grey over black, this example’s timeless color combination suits its purposeful lines, while the low mileage of just 7,550 km*suggests it has been carefully preserved.
Production of all SLS variants worldwide totaled only around 11,700 units, making the SLS AMG a relatively rare sight and a desirable collector’s piece. For drivers, it offers an immersive, analogue supercar experience. For collectors, it stands as a landmark in AMG history, a petrol fueled celebration of performance just before the turbo era fully took hold.
