Description
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing is a modern supercar with a direct connection to the legendary 300 SL. Its roof hinged doors, long hood, and compact two seat cabin make every arrival an event, while the design by Mercedes-Benz stylist Mark Fetherston gives this SLS a timeless presence rather than a passing fashion statement.
Behind the front axle sits AMG’s naturally aspirated 6.3 liter V8, producing 563 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 479 lb ft of torque at 4,750 rpm. Power reaches the rear wheels through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT seven speed dual clutch transmission, with a rear mounted transaxle that helps create balanced 47 to 53 weight distribution. The result is serious straight line performance, with a 0 to 60 mph time of approximately 3.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 197 mph.
An aluminum space frame keeps the structure remarkably light at about 3,573 pounds in United States specification, while the dry sump lubrication system supports sustained high performance driving. Double wishbone suspension, a carbon fiber driveshaft, limited slip differential, and powerful compound disc brakes give the SLS the hardware to match its dramatic appearance. Staggered 19 inch front and 20 inch rear wheels wear 265 section front and 295 section rear performance tires.
The SLS was the first car designed and developed entirely from the ground up by Mercedes-AMG, establishing an important chapter in the company’s history. Approximately 11,450 examples were produced worldwide between 2010 and 2015, making it limited in number without falling below the 10,000 example threshold for formal exclusivity. As a petrol powered, rear wheel drive AMG flagship, this 2011 Gullwing delivers theater, engineering depth, and a naturally aspirated soundtrack that later turbocharged successors could not quite replicate.
